An object to be imaged is placed in the image plane of the scanning image reader. As the object is moved in a scan direction, the scanning image reader generates a scan line in the image plane for each scan line of the object. As each scan line is generated, a light source is strobed for a pulse of illumination. This light source illuminates the object with a light beam, and a collection optics receives light reflected back from the object. A light source that is continuously energized usually provides a large light beam. This large light beam can have a relatively large heat profile. This larger heat profile can raise the temperature of the light source. The larger temperature profile of the light source can be disadvantageous, because it can diminish the light beam, resulting in diminished image formation. To avoid this drawback, pulsed light sources are used. Pulsed light sources can be less than the continuous beam source, resulting in a smaller heat profile, and thereby can avoid diminishing the light beam. However, pulsed light sources must also generate a light beam with a corresponding size. This also results in a smaller light beam. Unfortunately, this smaller light beam can have a correspondingly lower intensity. This lower intensity can also diminish the image.
